Room Decorating Basics

Decorating the various rooms in your home doesn’t have to be a difficult and complicated task.  There are so many ways to improve the overall look of your home without having to pay interior decorating experts or breaking the bank for expensive and ultra modern fixtures and furnishing. All you really need is some creativity, imagination and inspiration.

To help you get started, create a picture of how you want your home and each of its rooms to appear. Do you want one consistent and cohesive look? Do you want everything to stick to a certain theme? For example, do you want to have wooden preschool furniture all over the house and for every room to have a cottage-like theme or charm? Do you like a minimalist look all throughout? Or maybe you want to stick to only one specific color scheme or color combination. Consistency in every inch of space in the house can be a really great thing, as you don’t need to come up with different ideas for each room. This can also be a wise decision when you think about your resources and your limitations.

However, keep in mind the most important consideration to consistency: consensus. Does every person living in the house with you agree to the overall decorating theme? You also need to think whether the children would love having their rooms sticking to the general look as well, or whether your male-dominated family would be fond of rose-colored walls. Another factor to consider is the practicality of a consistent home decorating scheme, given your lifestyle, the size of your family, and other factors. Think about whether it will be wise to adopt a totally Zen home when you have three little kids running around 24 hours a day.

If a unified scheme doesn’t appeal to you or if members of your household are just too different in terms of personalities and preferences, then adopt the only other approach there is: decorate each room differently. Work on a plan or design for each room such that it jives with the character of the room’s dweller. For common rooms like the living room or the dining hall, decorate it in such a way that each person will love, or that will speak of you as one family or one household. This approach will make decorating a win-win situation for everybody.

When decorating each of the rooms in your house, plan out the pieces of furniture as well as all the other items – like appliances – you will need to set up. Make a list of items that you need to buy, without going overboard. Make sure you don’t overestimate the size of the room and end up buying more items than it can accommodate. It is best if you start setting up the larger pieces before the smaller ones. This will make the task of arranging easy, as well as help you maximize floor space while leaving plenty of room to move around. Besides, once you have gotten the bigger pieces in place, it will be much easier to put on the tiny details and the accents that add to the room’s charm.

When planning on room decorations and home improvements on a budget, just be careful not to get carried away with your ideas. It is normal for us to want the best items for our homes and have it look really sophisticated and chic, but if money is tight, aim for elegance, comfort and simplicity. You can achieve these three and have your home look really neat and well-thought of without spending beyond what you can afford. Just keep in mind that the obviously luxurious decorations or designs cost so much more, and it is best if you leave it for later.

Decorating your home and its rooms may take much of your time – from deliberating with family members, to selecting furniture, purchasing all necessary items, and the execution of the design. While doing all this, keep in mind that all your efforts go into creating a comfortable and beautiful living space for yourself and your loved ones. Every little amount of energy you spend into decorating and beautifying your home will be rewarded with many years worth of wonderful memories you will make inside its walls.
